What to Do for Chip Repair In Your Windshield

What to Do When for Chip Repair In Your Windshield

After something dings your windshield, you have to get a chip repair.

You’re on your way to an important even when you pass by a road construction area. There are plenty of rocks and debris scattered about, and without being able to do a single thing about it, a rock hits your windshield. The whole incident takes no more than a second, and it is so quick that you’re not sure what just happened. You drive your car to the nearest gas station, notice the crack and wonder why this had to happen to you of all drivers. But since this has happened, there is no other option. You have to get a chip repair. Here’s a checklist of everything you need to do for a chip repair in your windshield.

Take a Picture of Your Windshield

The very first step you have to take when you find your windshield is dented is to take a picture of it. This way, if your insurance does ask for a detailed description of the damage, you can send them an exact photograph. Plus, it’s always a smart idea to have proof of the accident just in case something happens that makes the insurance company refuse to pay you for a chip repair for your windshield.

Measure the Damage

The very next step should be measuring your damage. You’re probably thinking, what would measuring a crack have to do with fixing it up? The fact of the matter is, a large crack that’s splitting in multiple directions is not the type of damage that can be repaired on your own. For that reason, measuring the crack is very essential. If your windshield damage is less than six inches, then it can certainly be repaired for you. But, if the damage is longer than six inches, you will need a full-on windshield replacement for your vehicle.

File an Insurance Claim

Once you’ve taken a picture and measured the crack, you will need to file an insurance claim. Many auto body repair shops will deal with your insurance for you, so you don’t have to stress yourself out. However, in the scenario that you can’t get an auto repair shop to file a claim, you will have to do it yourself. Typically, if you have comprehensive coverage and your glass claim is covered, that means you are good to go for your windshield repair.

Go to an Auto Body Repair Shop

Lastly, you should call an auto body repair shop for any chip repair issues that you do have. They will be very responsive and helpful with any problems you might have with your windshield!
