When your car is in an accident it can be a scary and frustrating time. The time after the accident, when your car is in the shop getting fixed, can continue to be frustrating. This is especially true when your mechanic or collision repair shop tells you that your car needs a diagnostic repair scan but your insurance company won’t pay for it. What is that? What Is A Diagnostic Scan?
A diagnostic scan is a way to check for errors in the computer system of a car. Modern cars have hundreds and sometimes thousands of computer processes running the various technology in the vehicle. The diagnostic scan will check every computer system and automatic feature for errors.
What About Warning Lights?
There are far more computer processes in the average car than there is space on the dashboard for warning lights. In the mid-nineties, car manufacturers disassociated many of the computer processes from the dashboard warning light system, meaning if something goes wrong in those systems there is no light to trigger. Instead, the only way to check these processes is for a mechanic to scan them for issues and errors – the diagnostic scan.
When Should You Get a Diagnostic Scan?
Most car manufacturers (often called OEMs or Original Equipment Manufacturers) have released statements that say that after an accident, most cars need a diagnostic scan to ensure that all passengers are safe and that all processes and systems are unharmed after the collision and vehicle repair. OEMs also release repair procedures for every make and model of vehicle. Your mechanic should be using these guidelines, so ask if the need for a diagnostic scan is required by the OEM’s repair guidelines.
Why Won’t Insurance Companies Pay For Them?
While OEMs have made general statements about the value of diagnostic scans after an accident, insurance companies want more detailed guidelines for mechanics to follow. If there aren’t explicit instructions that say the scan is necessary, insurance companies often refuse to pay. Sometimes, they will agree to pay for the scan but only if it discovers an issue. If your insurance company is denying the scan, call them and find out why. If your mechanic has documentation that the OEM recommends the scan, they may change their minds.
