The Top Collision Repair Myths You Should Avoid

Collision Repair
Be on the lookout for these collision repair myths because you never want to fall for one that will lead to you not getting the repairs you need!

When you are in an auto collision, it can be a scary and stressful time. Many people don’t even know what to do when they’re in an accident. They certainly don’t know the in’s-and-out’s of the auto repair industry. In fact, many people believe myths about collision repair that simply aren’t true. Here are the five most common of them.

You Have To Use The Shop You Insurance Company Says

This is one of the most pervasive and untrue myths about auto collision repair. After an accident, you have the right to take your care to whatever repair place you want to. If your insurance company tries to force you to go to a specific place, that is actually illegal (it’s called steering). What most insurance companies will do is offer a list of preferred providers, ones who they have set up with to pay directly, in most cases.

Insurance Covers Everything

The extent of the covered repairs is going to depend on the type of policy you have. If you’re unsure what your policy actually covers, don’t wait till you’re in an accident to find out. You can always call your insurance company and ask for the details of your policy.

You Have To go to A Dealership

Many people mistakenly believe that to get a car fixed “like new” they have to go to a dealer. Independent auto repair shops have access to the same tools, parts, and repair guidelines as the dealerships. In fact, they can often do the repairs just as well, but more quickly and for less money.

Insurance Companies Won’t Pay More Than Their Estimate

You insurance company is required to pay according to you policy. They may talk to the repair shop and try to find a way to whittle the price down, but ultimately they must pay their share of the cost to get your car back on the road.

You Need Three Estimates

Another old myth is that you must get three estimates before the insurance company will honor your insurance and repair your car. This is false, you only need one estimate. However, if you are new to auto repair, it is likely worth your time to shop around and get additional estimates.
