The 4 Most Shocking Things that Damage Your Cars Paint

There are a handful of products and chemicals that can leave permanent damage to your car’s paint.

If you’re a car owner, you already know that car paint is susceptible to being damaged under certain conditions. An auto accident or someone dinging your door can often leave a bit of damage to your car’s paint, but what else could? There are a handful of products and chemicals that can leave permanent damage to your car’s paint. Knowing far in advance which things can be harmful will help you from any future damage to your car’s paint. Here are four of the most shocking things that can damage your car’s paint.

Brake Fluid

There’s been a bit of confusion about this substance’s effects in the automotive industry. Some experts say that not all brake fluids are harmful to your car’s surface, but you should still be careful when handling it, especially liquids that aren’t silicone-based. Generally, this refers to any older types of brake fluid, which are caustic and can act like paint thinner to your car’s paint.

Soda and Coffee

A lot of people don’t know that drinks like soda and coffee can harm your car’s paint. These beverages have high acidity levels, which can gnaw away at the protective layer of paint and kick start the corrosion process. Sugar in soda and your coffee also leave behind a sticky residue. Make sure to clean up any spills as soon as possible to prevent any long-term damage to your car’s paint.

Gas

You should be careful when you fill up your tank. Gas that leaks or drips onto the body of your car can stain. The gasoline evaporates, but it can potentially leave marks behind and damage the clear coat of your car’s paint. The best way to prevent this is to have your vehicle waxed after a car wash. This also makes cleanup much more manageable.

Bird Droppings

This one is a bit shocking but still true. Bird droppings can leave a permanent stain on the outside of your vehicle due to its acidic nature. It doesn’t help that when it’s baked under the sun, they harden onto your car’s paint. It’s best not to let any droppings dry up and remove them immediately with a wet rag. While cleaning, try not to rub the spot because grit and seed particles in the droppings also can scratch up the surface of your car’s paint.
