How to Avoid an Auto Collision This New Year’s Eve

The best we can do is prepare ourselves and do whatever is in our power to stay safe during this holiday time.

Just about everyone can get in on the fun of New Year’s Eve. That said, it’s also a time when people are consuming alcohol, and unfortunately, that means there are going to be some drunk drivers out on the roads. The best we can do is prepare ourselves and do whatever is in our power to stay safe during this holiday time. Take these tips for avoiding an auto collision this New Year’s Eve to heart and remember to stay safe out there on the roads!

Assign a Driver

When you go out with groups of people, make sure someone is always willing and able to drive. That means they need to abstain from drinking for the night and can act as a reliable operator of a vehicle. Ending up without a driver is no fun and may encourage drunk driving, ultimately increasing the risk of an auto collision. Services like Uber or Lyft are other options to consider, or you can always go old school with a taxi or professional limo service.

Stay the Night

Instead of having to worry about driving whatsoever, why not just stay the night? Asking a friend or family member if you can crash on their couch—and save the driving for the morning when you’re sober—can prevent a lot of difficulties. If you end up going out for the night, see if there are any hotels you can stop at for the night in the area.

Take Keys

If a friend is planning on drunk driving or if you just know someone drove to their destination and plans on drinking, ask for their keys. This helps keep drunk drivers off the road. Instead, try to come up with safer solutions like calling them a cab or just letting them sleep wherever the shindig is taking place.

Report Drunk Drivers

Not everyone is going to be nabbing the keys from their friends. Unfortunately, some people are going to end up drunk driving. If you see someone you suspect is a drunk driver due to erratic behavior or weaving, make sure you call 911.

Make Good Choices

Even if you’re not at fault for an auto collision because you weren’t the driver, you can still avoid a bad situation by making good choices and not getting into a drunk person’s car. Talk that person out of driving and figure out another solution.
