Summer is a busy time of year for most people. There are weekend road trips, backyard barbecues, and family vacations to fit into the schedule, on top of figuring out what to do with the kids while they’re out of school. So it should be no surprise that the summer months of June, July, and August see nearly 30% more car collisions than the rest of the months of the year. Those sunny summer days between Memorial Day and Labor Day also traditionally see a spike in fatal automobile accidents as well. So how can you avoid auto collisions this summer? Read on for four tips.
Perform Car Maintenance
The heat of summer puts a lot of additional stress on your automobile, and cars are more likely to have tire blowouts and mechanical problems because of it. Get a tune up of your vehicle and make any needed repairs so that it is prepared to deal with the realities of summer driving. This should include checking all of the air filters, the rubber on the windshield wipers, the brakes and brake pads, and the tires. You should also get your oil changed just before or in the beginning of the summer.
Watch For Bikes and Pedestrians
The warmer weather will bring out more bikers and pedestrians than the rest of the year. You should pay special attention in areas where there will likely be more children, as they are often unpredictable, including near parks or pools and in residential areas. There are also bike lanes being added to many busy streets, so keep an eye out for bikers who may be trying to bike more and drive less.
Talk To Your Teens
If you have teen drivers, sit down and have a serious talk with them. Car accidents are the biggest killer of teens, and there are many more teens on the roads during the summer than other times of the year. Make sure your teen is aware of the dangers of distracted driving (including their music and their friends), as well as the dangers of driving while drowsy or intoxicated.
Paying attention and limiting distractions is very important all year, but in the summer, when there are more cars on the road, it is even more important. Make a point of sending texts or programming your navigation system before you even shift out of park. While you’re driving, try not to make or take calls if it is not absolutely necessary.
